Most of us became sucked into the world of Fushigi Yuugi through the anime series. Beautiful animation, the series follows the manga almost exactly (a few things omitted). Just like the manga, the anime follows middle school student Miaka Yuki, who one day at the library finds an old book, almost by fate, and becomes sucked into the pages and finds herself in ancient China. And almost as quickly as she finds herself in the book, she is donning the role of Priestess of Suzaku: one of the four Gods. Charged with the duty of collecting all seven seishi in order to summon the legendary Suzaku, she will be granted three wishes. Of course this would not be a shoujo series if there wasn't love, and heartache. Miaka must battle for the love of Tamahome, and her best friend Yui, who has become the Priestess of Seiryuu, and her enemy.
Fushigi Yuugi began airing on Japanese TV back on April 06 1995, and is a total of 52 episodes long. In addition there have been three OVA's (Original Video Animation) made that follow where the original series left off. The first OVA is only 3 episodes long, and takes place some time between the end of the original series, and OVA 2. OVA 1 was made purely for anime fans, and has nothing to do with the original manga storyline, and takes place one year after the events of the original series. OVA 2, is six episodes long, and follows the second half (arc two) of the manga.
Due to the high popularity of the FY anime series, OVA 3, Eikouden was created. ,This OVA is based off of the FY novel of the same name, written by Megumi Bishizaki (with illustrations by Watase). The Eikouden OVA is four episodes long, and revisits the land of Konan, where Taka, along with Mayo, a young girl who has a crush on Taka, goes inside the book to escape her life. With hopes to get her happy tale ending (with Taka of course).

The series was first released by Pioneer, and has been re-released under Geneon (which is actually just Pioneer, with a new name). Pioneer released the VHS versions as well as the studly box set editions (seen below). Geneon released the regular DVD editions, which you can probably still find at any location that sells DVDs. There are no current plans on re-releasing the OVA's, which are only available in box set editions. For the Special edition box sets, the series was split in half. Episodes 1 - 26 in the Suzaku set, and 27 - 52 in the Seiryuu set. And For the English OVA's, OVA one and two was put into one box set titled "Oni" while the English version of Eikouden was released in two editions, a standard and special edition. The special edition set includes ten mini pencil boards.
